Maries Headshots

Wikipedia defines a headshot as: “A headshot is a photographic technique where the focus of the photograph is a person’s face”. Recently I found Marie on Starnow and have asked her to model for me a few times, she is very natural and photogenic.

This week I wanted to try out some close up portraiture ideas and arranged a test with Marie. Makeup & Hair was by Michelle Proctor and the results look amazing, Marie’s expressions are really fierce!

Quite recently I have been approached by photographers asking for advice and assisting opportunities and I thought I would post a little blurb on the importance of headhshots; and some tips on how to achieve the best results.

So here goes….

Headshots are a critical piece of many professionals. A dynamic headshot for models, actors, and other performance professionals will be the difference between acquiring the gig or not. Your clients can be no more excited than if they get a gig based on the power of their headshot – and of course, this means more jobs for you.

Follow these few tips to achieve the perfect headshot.

1. Focus on the eyes.

The eyes are said to be the window of the soul. Therefore, nothing is more important than achieving sharp, crisp eyes in your shot. Capturing the eyes in a powerful way will draw the viewer into the photo, establishing a strong connection that will speak volumes.

2. Watch your angles.

Remember that for close up shots, angles will affect the outcome look and feel. For women, make the eyes appear larger and the face more delicate by shooting down on them. For men, emphasize strength and achievement by shooting slightly up.

3. Use diffused light.

In close up shots, the skin is a central feature. It’s crucial to show the skin without blemishes. Achieve this by using diffused light to gently wrap around the skin, bringing definition along the lines of the face without highlighting blemishes.

4. Add a hair light

Detail is critical in head-shots and are no more dynamic than when created with a hair-light. A hair-light can be placed above or behind the subject [with a flash or the sun] to add depth to the shot, and pull the top of the head out of the background.

5. Use of Lens

Nothing is more disturbing than a near-dynamic headshot that fails simply because of lens distortion. Generally, avoid mid to wide angle lenses for close headshots. Instead, use a lens that will compress your image and slim your subjects face – typically 90mm and above.

6. Guide expression

The final most important element is an expression to match the purpose of the headshot. It’s your job as photographer to pull out the most natural looks from your subjects. Do so by guiding them through complimenting conversation; i.e. asking serious questions to pull out a thoughtful gaze, or cracking a joke to capture a natural smile.

Lisa’s Beauty Portraits

I absolutely adore my latest acquisition a Nikon F/1.8 50mm lens. I couldn’t imagine life without it. Everyone who buys this lens is amazed by the quality and sharpness. I arranged a test shoot recently with Lisa Bostock from Boss and the results are stunning.

The F/1.8′s depth really shows it is the perfect lens for my passion of close up portraiture. It focuses very quickly even in low light and its extremely sharp even at F/1.8.

Revolution

Revolution Photoshoot

I have been itching to shoot some editorial fashion and the opportunity came when Lifestyle Monthly gave me the opportunity to shoot the magazines January fashion feature. Researching a theme, I thought I would use my history degree and add an element of historical significance.

The theme I came up with was Military Revolution; and Steven Spencer Stylist went to work putting together some amazing outfits for our models; including some great props from the Army.

Michelle Proctor did an excellent job with the models hair and makeup, and we shot on location at the Malmaison Liverpool and the Liverpool Central Library. Please pick up a copy of Lifestyle Monthly for the full feature.

Young Hairdresser of the Year 09 Finalists’ Photos

A collection of images by Rory Lewis Photographer will feature in the finals of the prestigious Hairdressers Journal, Young Hairdressees Awards 2009.

The photographs showcase the work of salon finalists Hooka and were short-listed from thousands of applications across the UK.

Rory’s years of experience shooting fashion and hair means the resulting photographs combine precision lighting techniques and attention to detail that keep the styles dynamic.

His approach to hair photography is based on vibrancy, sensuality and movement, both in close-cropped and ¾ length shots, and this captured the eye of the experienced panel of judges from Hairdresser’s Journal.

Rory said: “Shooting hair is very different to shooting fashion; both require technical skill and detailed preparation to create powerful imagery but careful composition is crucial with hair photography to properly showcase the styles and bring them to life. Often there is very little time with the models on the shoot so I need to quickly get them moving into positions that really work to get the feel right. It is great that the judges of this award were able to see the true skill of the stylists at Hooka through my images.”

Rory forged a close working relationship with Hooka and hair stylist, Jon Wraight, throughout the preparation for the shoot; providing expert advice on looks from the mood boards and casting, and inputting creative ideas for the shoot. This included helping to shape the artistic team of stylists and make-up artists to create the entry for the awards.

Jon said he was very happy with the creative process and the end result. He said: “It looks like something you see in Vogue – high end editorial. It has turned out amazing”.

Rory said: “I work closely with each client before the start of a shoot to establish the look they are after and this drives my preparation,”. “With hair photography, you have to make sure that all the aspects work together, and that the makeup compliments, rather than overrides the story of the shoot. Flexibility is essential to make changes that get the best end results if necessary. The lighting should enhance the hair and not flatten the feel while keeping that vital energy that shows the detail of the style and uses the impact from creating shadows.”

Plain Theme

This week I arranged a test with Jess one of Boss Model Managements new faces. I wanted to go for a really plain style of clothing and hair; to allow the makeup applied by Michelle Proctor to stand out and it worked rather well.
